~ Babbletype Reviews ~
What Is Babbletype?
If you are looking for a way to make some money in your spare time at home without it interfering with your regular schedule, then possibly Babbletype might be for you. Or you could do what I did and join Wealthy Affiliate as a way to make great money on the internet.
The company offers a transcription service for various businesses, and those who sign up to work for Babbletype can earn small amounts of money by doing the actual transcribing.
It’s very similar to another place I recently reviewed called TranscribeMe.
How It Works
Companies submit audio to Babbletype, then it’s up to Babbletype to get members to transcribe that audio into written words.
Joining as a transcriptionist is free, but in order to be eligible to work for Babbletype as an independent contractor, you must be a native English speaker. They also offer translation services, so in order to undertake any of those projects, you will need to be proficient in both English and the language they need translated, obviously.
Babbletype essentially offer 3 services:
- Transcription
- Translation
- Proofreading
Let’s briefly look at the three:
Transcription
When you perform this task you are known as a “transcriptionist”. What you will be doing is listening to fairly short segments of audio and typing out exactly what you hear. You have to be accurate or you risk not getting paid. The recordings are about all sorts of things. Sometimes the voice will be singular, while other times you’ll be transcribing things like telephone conversations.
Translation
Again you’ll be transcribing from audio files, only these will be in a different language. This is actually more challenging, as you are not only transcribing what you hear, but having to actually translate it accurately as well.
Proofreading
This part of the job requires going through the written material that has been transcribed or translated. Here you will be comparing the audio file with what’s been written down to make sure it’s accurate.
New assignments for all of the above are posted around 6pm each day, and it’s basically first in, first served if you want the work. All assignments will be due by 4pm the following afternoon. Babbletype will also send emails to you about current jobs as well.
How Much Can You Earn With Babbletype?
Ah, the million dollar question.
The method of remuneration is by audio minute, meaning you get paid a certain amount for every minute of audio you transcribe. Don’t get that confused with how many minutes it takes you to transcribe something. You might spend 5 minutes transcribing one minute of audio, but you get paid for that one minute.
If you want to know more about a far better way to make money online with your time, then check out the opportunity and training that Wealthy Affiliate are offering. It's what I did.
Babbletype claim the average pay per minute of audio is 45 cents, but it varies depending on the job. Some audio will be a breeze to transcribe, while other audio files might be hard to hear or understand, requiring you to listen to them over and over again. Obviously these jobs are going to take longer. You have to get it right too, or you may not get paid.
Proofreading pays less, anywhere between 13 cents to 18 cents per transcribed minute of audio. Proofreading translated audio pays slightly more than transcriptions that were in English.
If you are a translator, the pay rate varies depending on the language, but your can expect the pay to fall somewhere between $1.30-$1.60 per audio minute.
When Will You Be Paid?
Babbletype uses PayPal to pay transcriptionists, translators and proofreaders. They make payment once per week.
Target Audience
This is not too bad a gig for people with a bit of spare time, who are fast typists, or good translators, are accurate and don’t mind tedious work. If you struggle to concentrate, can’t sit still for long or take forever to find the keys on a keyboard, then Babbletype is probably not for you.
What I Like
- You get to work from home
- You can set your own hours and work your own schedule
- They pay in real cash via PayPal
What I Don’t Like
- The pay is very low for the amount of time you’ll put into transcribing, translating or proofreading
- Some of the audio files can be hard to hear or unclear, increasing the time it takes to do the job
- You need to be very accurate or you may not get paid if you make too many mistakes
- There are complaints that the reviewers are too harsh on the transcriptionists
How Much Does Babbletype Cost To Join?
It costs nothing to join Babbletype and work as a transcriptionist, translator, proofreader, or a combination of the above.
Is Babbletype a Scam?
It’s not a scam. It all seems legit and above board. The downside is the amount of time you will put into the tasks, as compared to how much you will be paid. Chances are you might only make a few dollars per hour, which is a very similar rate to doing online surveys, which are far easier in my opinion.
It might be worth a try if you have a keen ear, can type fast, and can readily listen to audio and transcribe it without constantly having to replay the audio file.
If you want to make some serious money for your time though, then I’d be inclined to give Babbletype a miss.
Try My Top Recommendation To Make Money
I’ve done things like this in the past. Along with dabbling in rewards sites and paid surveys. They all have one thing in common though, and that is the very low pay.
Because I was keen to make a fulltime living on the internet, I searched out other ways that are far better.
That’s when I came across affiliate marketing. The thing I love about affiliate marketing is it’s such a simple business model and costs very little to do. Perfect. All you are really doing is promoting the products and services of companies and earning commissions if someone makes a purchase through your referral, and you can learn how to do it here.
Rather than explain it all here, if you click through on the banner below you can read my guide on affiliate marketing, how to get started, and be introduced to some awesome training I did with Wealthy Affiliate. It’s well worth a read and only takes a few minutes, so click the banner below and check it out.
