What Is Ibotta?
The Ibotta app can be downloaded to your smartphone (IOS or Android devices) and is designed to save you money on your shopping by offering cashback deals on a variety of items available at certain stores. The best part is, it’s completely free to download and use.
It was launched in 2012 and has around 22 million downloads since its inception. In fact, it is considered one of the most frequently used shopping apps in the entire United States. The company is based in Denver, Colorado and is really changing the landscape of shopping.
Founder and current CEO Brian Leach came up with the idea for Ibotta in 2011 and saw his dreams materialise in 2012.
While saving money shopping is awesome, it's not really going to get you anywhere if the plan is to make some real money.

How It Works
The very first step is to actually join the Ibotta scheme by downloading the app and setting up a member profile.
Once you’re ready to shop, simply click on any participating store and start shopping for items you want with cashback deals attached. You will be presented with a gallery of available items, each specifying how much Ibotta is willing to pay you upon making a purchase. Add these items to your purchasing queue and then start shopping.
Once you’ve done this you now need to physically go out to the store you’ve chosen and make your purchase. This app isn’t so much designed for online purchases, but purchases in real life stores. However, there are quite a few online options available as well, such as booking hotels and so on.
Once you’ve made the designated purchases, before Ibotta can offer you cashback, you must first prove you actually purchased the item(s) in question. You do this by uploading a photo of the receipt via the Ibotta app. Your proof of purchase should be verified within 24 hours of photo upload.
Once verified, the designated cashback amount will be credited to your personal Ibotta account.

Where Can You Use the Ibotta App?
The Ibotta app is only available for use with US stores and for US residents. As you have to physical go into many of these stores, the app is not a viable cashback option for anyone outside the US.

The good news is, you only need to reach a threshold of $20 before you can either cash out with real dollars via PayPal, or redeem your payout amount in gift cards. The choice is yours.
Refer Others To Ibotta
Ibotta has a referral program, where you can earn every time someone you recommends joins the program. As soon as they redeem their first purchase through the app, Ibotta will pay you $5. Pretty easy cash, and worthwhile if you can refer lots of people.
Target Audience
Seriously, if you live in the US and shop regularly both online and offline, then this is a handy tool for just about everyone. Ibotta is associated with so many stores and other retail outlets and services, both online and off, that there really is plenty of choice for everyone.
What I Like
- The range of retail choices is huge and covers just about everything you could spend money on
- The cashback amounts are quite generous
- The app is free to download and very simple to use
- It doesn’t take long to reach the $20 payout minimum
- If you are a busy shopper, you could seriously save yourself quite a bit of money over time
- There is a referral program
What I Don’t Like
- It’s only available in the US
- Some people have complained about Ibotta closing down their account for no apparent reason

Is Ibotta a Scam?
I don’t see any scam going on here whatsoever. In fact, this looks like one of the better cashback schemes going around. For me, the only real limitation is locality. There are other apps that are available to people in a variety of countries, whereas Ibotta can only be used in the US.
Other than that it’s a great app that can save you quite a bit of money over a period of time.
