What Is User Testing?
Things need to be beta tested for functionality and to iron out bugs and the like. This can include new websites, apps, software programs, games and all sorts of things. So in order for the maker to “get it right” and deliver the best product with the very best user experience, they need to first test these products by putting them in the hands of real, everyday people – the kind of people who are likely to be the ones using them when officially released.
That’s where platforms like User Testing come into play. It’s a bit like how survey sites get people to participate in paid surveys so companies can gather valuable feedback. Testing products is the same principle.
The User Testing company has actually been around since 2007, when it was founded by Darrell Benatar and Dave Garr. As of this writing, more than 1 million feedback videos have passed through the User Testing site, and so far they have dealt with close to 35,000 different companies and businesses.

How It Works
The idea is that people like you and me, who may have a bit of spare time on our hands and want to earn a few dollars, can sign up for User Testing and start testing the functionality of websites, apps and other things. We answer questions regarding our findings and submit the feedback, for which we earn a small reward.
It’s free to join, and once you’ve created an account, you then need to go through a test video so you truly understand what’s required. You will be looking at a website, and you need to actually voice your feedback as it will be recorded. If you pass the test, you’re in.
Now is when you will start to receive invites to test platforms. You don’t have much time to accept the test, as they take a limited number of participants, and if you’re too slow to jump on it you’ll miss out. They don’t email you the tests. You need to have the User Testing site open and keep an eye on your dashboard for when tests become available.
Before you can do the full test, they first ask you some screening questions (just like with surveys), to make sure you are the kind of participant they’re looking for. Pass the screening test and you then go on to complete the paid side of the test.
How Much Money Will You Make?
You will make more than you get doing things like paid surveys, or playing around on rewards sites like Swagbucks. It’s not something where you will make big dollars, but they definitely pay you reasonably well for your valuable time.
The average testing session runs for about 20 minutes and they compensate you with $10. So that works out to be a $30 an hour rate, so not too shabby. There are also shorter tests that take about 5 minutes to complete and these ones pay $3.
The downside, despite the money being okay, is that you won’t get that many tests to do. You also have to get in quick, as well as pass the qualifying questions when there is a test available.
User Testing pay by PayPal, and they pay exactly 7 days after you have successfully completed a test, so that’s pretty good compared to other platforms out there. It’s real cash and it’s paid in a timely manner. I like that.

What You Need To Participate

- Be over 18 years of age
- Have a PayPal account to receive your payments
- Excellent command of the English language
Target Audience
This is targeted at anyone with a bit of spare time who would like to earn some extra cash online. You won’t be able to make a fulltime gig out of it, because there are not enough tests to do, but the pay is good and worth it for some extra cash on the side. It’s also targeted at those whose first language is English, or have a great command of English, as all answers need to be spoken in clear English.
What I Like

- The payments are quite high compared to survey and rewards sites

- The concept is a little different
- It’s a good way to earn some extra cash here and there
- It’s quite easy to do the tests
What I Don’t Like
- The tests are too few and far between
- You have to respond quickly or you’ll miss out on doing a test
- You have to answer qualifying questions and might get screened out
How Much Does User Testing Cost?
It doesn’t costs participants anything to join User Testing and do tests. The companies pay User Testing, and User Testing pay members for their time and effort.
Is User Testing a Scam?
Definitely not a scam. In fact, I’m quite impressed with the whole User Testing experience. I’d say the only real downside to this platform is a distinct lack of tests to complete. The pay is not bad, but getting a chance to earn in the first place is the hard part.
It’s worth giving User Testing a try, but just go into it knowing that you will only get tests to complete every now and then. In other words, don’t bank on the money you might earn there. Just treat it as an opportunity to make a little extra on the side every so often.

Doing user testing and surveys is okay for a bit of side cash, but you can’t make a living out of it. You definitely can with affiliate marketing. Keep at it and the income grows and grows, much of it coming in passively after a while.
