Web Video Marketing - Whats Good And What To Avoid

These days it seems everyone is using web video marketing to increase exposure for their business, product or service. YouTube is loaded up with marketing and promotional videos of all kinds. Some are great while others are not so good. And I’m not just talking about the quality of the videos, either.

In this article we will look at some things you should do when creating a marketing video, as well as those things you should avoid.

Let’s get started.

Make Your Video Interesting To Watch

You’ve decided to create a video to promote a product. You could just go the route of doing a video product review, pointing out the good stuff about the product. This can be a little dull, though. Try adding something a little educational or helpful in the video, like a story or scenario where this product has really helped someone solve a problem. If you can inject some humour into the video, then all the better. On that point, if you make a mistake (blooper) while shooting the video and it’s rather funny, consider leaving it in the final cut. We all relate to the humanity in others, and making errors (particularly funny ones) naturally makes us connect more.

Testimonials And Satisfied Customers

If you have some positive testimonials to back up your offering, then include one in the video, or at least in the video’s description below the video. Only include real testimonials. Plastering your video with glowing testimonials that sound completely bogus will just kill your marketing efforts. Never quote unbelievable figures people can earn in very short time spans. Be real and be genuine. People will spot that and be drawn to it.

Speak In A Conversational Manner

Unless it’s a video for the corporate world, just talk in a conversational tone when shooting the video. Chat about your service or product as if you are telling a friend about it over a cup of coffee. Keep it relaxed. Viewers relate better to a real person rather than someone who expounds the words like a programmed robot. Speak clearly, but keep it natural.

Use Hand Gestures

Using hand gestures while speaking makes us look a lot less stiff. It’s something that is always taught in public speaking training, and video is a bit like public speaking online. Even more important if you are conducting live webinars. Hand gestures are fantastic for really emphasising certain points too. They help to keep the viewers attention, stopping their mind and eyes from wandering off the video.

Props and Background

Have some props in the background so the scene looks interesting, or shoot the video out in nature or in a library or by the pool. Anything that makes it more watchable. If you are demonstrating a product, then you have a ready made prop to include in the shoot. Sometimes even just holding onto a piece of paper can make you feel more relaxed while speaking into the camera.

Include Website Information

You want to include website information (or any info on how customers can reach you) at the start and end of your video, as well as in the video description. There’s little point creating a promotional video if no one knows how to get in contact for further information or to make a purchase.

Shoot In Good Lighting

Sounds like an obvious tip, but I’m never ceased to be amazed just how many videos I see on the net shot in poor light. Lighting is everything when it comes to video and photography. Always use good lighting. You can even get really creative with the lighting and colours and make for a more memorable video. So long as it doesn’t distract or detract from the message you are trying to convey.

What To Avoid Doing With Video

To conclude I’ve compiled a list of some things to avoid when creating marketing videos:

  • Don’t shoot where there are lots of distractions or noise.
  • Don’t make the video too long (think short attention spans).
  • Avoid repeating the same statements over and over just to extend the video’s length.
  • Don’t record the video in low resolution.
  • Never plaster ads all over your video, particularly irrelevant ones.
  • Make sure your information is not outdated. Never make statements that are no longer current.
  • Never speak to your audience like they are retarded and are struggling to understand you. Credit them with some intelligence.

Video and Affiliate Marketing

If you are into affiliate marketing or are thinking about it, then doing brief videos to promote your affiliate offerings is an awesome way to make sales, commissions and to generate leads. In fact video is more and more becoming the medium of choice – combined with content marketing in written form – to market products and services.

  1. Do you think it would be a better idea to have a video where you show yourself in the video or one that works with just images and voice clips and other sounds? Because I’m personally a little nervous about the idea of having myself all over the video like that.

Does it not really matter anyway?

    • Hi Jaylin. I don’t think it really matters whether you show your face or not. Some of the most helpful videos I’ve seen the presenter doesn’t show their face, just the information you need to know.
