A Niche Explained
The word "niche" can apply to just about anything. Essentially a niche is a subject, or an interest. A category. Think books. Romance is a niche, crime is a niche, mystery is a niche. These are broad niches that can be further narrowed down, such as Historical Romance, Cosy Mystery etc. Niche isn’t some strange word with a mysterious meaning. It simply means a particular subject.

What’s My Niche?
In order to find and settle on a niche for your ‘niche’ website, you need to decide what you are passionate about. Or at least find something you are very interested in. If you have passions and strong interests, make a list of them. As you do you will be compiling a list of possible niches. Try and narrow them down even further so they are more defined.
If your interest is cars, don’t just decide on cars as the main subject, focus on what kind of cars interest you, or something about that particular model that captures your imagination.
Narrow them down so you have more chance of coming across as an authority in your chosen niche. Websites can still be successful covering broad niches, but you will find there is strong competition from some big, established players. A more-defined niche won’t be as competitive and you’ll have more chance of getting the focused traffic that you need in order to make money online.
You first need visitors to read your content, but what you really need is relevant, qualified visitors so you can ultimately convert them into sales.

Popular Or Not
Some subjects are going to be more popular than others, and they probably always will be. Three of the most popular and competitive broad niches are:
- Finance and making money online
- Dating and relationships
- Health and beauty
This site you are now reading belongs to the first niche on the list. It is a highly competitive area, but one I have a strong interest in. I’m passionate about making money; especially online. The more popular the niche, the more money that can be made. But on the flipside, there are way more people involved in those niches, all vying for a slice of that money pie.
Smaller niches may not have the big dollars on offer like the larger ones, but they also have way less players and way less competition. Even the most obscure of niches can make good money for the savvy marketer who really knows the subject he or she is writing about.
Affiliate Opportunities For Niches
If you settle on what you think might be an unusual, obscure niche, don’t think that there will be no opportunity to monetise your site with affiliate marketing opportunities. There are literally affiliate programs for everything.
Big players like the Amazon Associates program offer affiliates a commission on anything in the vast Amazon store. And Amazon sell practically everything. It’s not just books. There is a massive array of digital products available on ClickBank for marketers to promote. Commission Junction has thousands of stores and partners under their affiliate umbrella, selling all kinds of stuff.
Make a note that it’s also beneficial to deal with some companies direct. An example is Wealthy Affiliate. They have their own affiliate program where you can directly sell their awesome service. Many companies and businesses do the same thing. The best way to find these individual affiliate programs is through Google. Say your subject is pet accessories. Go into Google and type the following:

A whole list of affiliate opportunities will be revealed. Simply click on the ones that interest you and apply to be an affiliate for them. Affiliate programs are everywhere for everything, because it’s such a great way for business to get the word out about their merchandise. It’s like being a sales rep for these companies on the internet. In fact, that’s exactly what affiliate marketing is!

The internet is a big space, and there are opportunities in literally any niche imaginable.
