Why I Like Working From Home

FacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmailFacebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedintumblrmail

Maybe working from home isn’t for everyone, but it’s always been something I’ve aspired to and I’ve managed to do it consistently for years now. Working from home doesn’t always mean “working at home”. With internet-based enterprises you can practically work from anywhere. It’s the ultimate lifestyle freedom. That’s why I like working from home.

Lifestyle Freedom

Work From HomeThe words “lifestyle freedom”. What do they mean to you?

Everyone is different and we all like different things, so I can’t speak for everyone. All I can do is tell you what lifestyle freedom means to me.

For starters it means “not having to go to work”. Big plus in my life. Sure, what I do is work, but I don’t have to get up at a certain time, get dressed in particular clothes, head to the office or whatever and be subject to the rules and whims of a boss; telling me when I have to work, when I’m allowed to eat or use the bathroom. All that stuff associated with a regular job has never appealed to me (except maybe the regular pay day).

Entrepreneurs tend to like working for themselves, or working in cooperation with others also working for themselves. Not everyone chases this sort of working lifestyle, but it is often the driving force behind those that do.

You can work when you want and take time out to do other things whenever you like, practically. Just so long as you have the self discipline to get the work done when it’s required, then living this sort of lifestyle is certainly both achievable and sustainable.

Often times people doing the 9 to 5 grind find it hard to fit other important tasks into their daily lives. Even something simple like going to the bank might require a trip during the lunch break. Those who are parents find the lifestyle freedom of a home office type job extra appealing as it’s easy to slot children’s activities and school drop offs and pick ups into the daily routine.

There are many lifestyle positives to this business and I could literally write pages and pages detailing them all, but I don’t want to ramble on in this post and make it long and boring. You’re busy and I’m busy. Right?

Financial Freedom on Red Road Sign.

Freedom is Time AND Money

You can’t genuinely have true freedom without both time and money. Some people have time, but not much money to enjoy that time. Others have plenty of cash coming in, but little time to spend it. Life can be a real paradox.

Therefore, the goal should be to aim for a business model that allows both money and time. Only then can you really have freedom and fully enjoy life. That’s what I believe, anyway. You’re free to disagree with me if you like, but it’s hard to argue against having time and money is a good position to be in. Who really wouldn’t want that?

So how do we achieve this Nirvana of time and money freedom?

By setting up businesses and streams of passive and residual income. The internet is a fantastic breeding ground for these sorts of opportunities. Sow the seeds now and reap the harvest not too far down the track. Everything requires some work – especially in the beginning – and even “passive” income will require maintenance and input to keep that income stream flowing and healthy, but leading this sort of life is possible for just about anyone. I’ve been doing it for years and I’m no one gifted or special.

Working Naked

Laptop OutdoorsIt’s not often I would work naked, but the point is I can do it if I want to. There are so many things I can do (or not do) if I want to. That’s all part of the freedom of working your own gigs from home (or the beach, or the park, or even when travelling overseas).

Are you seeing a common thread here? A common word?

Yes, FREEDOM!

And who doesn’t love freedom?

I’ve spent time in the Philippines where I’ve continued working. I’ve sat in a quiet spot in the park with my laptop open, working on things while being surrounded by the energising vibes of nature. Sometimes I work late at night when all is quiet.

Working on the internet, or setting up anything that gives you residual income, allows you so much flexibility you can pretty much do whatever you want. That’s what I love and that’s why I like working from home.

Working From Home Opportunities

Recently I discovered that a friend of mine that I hadn’t seen for a few years was now making a healthy residual income from selling music for sync licensing. People buy the rights to use them on their wedding videos, for video game soundtracks, for song writing, in movies and all stuff like that. It’s actually his son that creates the music, but my friend was the one with the business smarts to realise there was money to be made and how to go about getting it.

I’ve listed numerous ways of making money on the internet on my website, but this one – producing music – is one I hadn’t considered before. It’s now opened my eyes to yet another way to make a healthy residual income stream. Sure, you need some talent for creating music, but I’m certain there are many people out there, maybe even you, who have some talent in this area.

There are two main things I do to create income streams online:

  1. Writing and selling eBooks
  2. Affiliate marketing

They are my main sources of income and have been for some years now. I do dabble in a few other things as well on a small scale, as I’m always looking to diversify and create even more income, but those two areas are my bread and butter.

Below I’ll list a few other possibilities for you:

  • Shopify LogoAn online store (ecommerce)
  • Drop Shipping
  • Selling your services
  • Selling your own products
  • eBay and Amazon stores
  • Writing and publishing eBooks
  • Creating and selling digital products
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Stock photography
  • Stock music (sound samples)
  • Forex and shares trading
  • Doing paid surveys
  • Creating apps for IOS and Android
  • Virtual assistant
  • Crowdfunding
  • Creating videos
  • Selling an eCourse

The above list is just a snapshot of the many possibilities for creating income online. Of course there are loads of offline opportunities as well, but as my website deals with primarily making money on the internet, I’m sticking to internet-related options.

  1. Darren,

I appreciate that you did not have pop-ups on your site, so I looked around a bit. I usually just click off when those start appearing!

Looked at your about me page, and it seems you have some credentials to back up your claims. I like to know something about the person who wrote the information.

I notice that you had several programs for work online products, which would you recommend for a beginner? A real new person with very few computer skills?

    Thank you,
    Sami

    • Hi Sami. If you are just looking for something really easy to do to start out, try signing up for some online survey companies. They don’t pay that much, but the surveys are really easy to do and you don’t need to be tech savvy at all.

If you are truly interested in starting an online business, then I would suggest setting up a free account with Wealthy Affiliate and starting their training. You can do the first 10 lessons at no cost to see if it’s something that interests you. After that you have to pay to complete the rest of the training, but it’s well worth it.

  2. You hit the nail on the head with this article. I like who you said about working naked. Although it is not something I can do as I unfortunately have people staying with me right now. I get what you mean – that means total freedom! I’ve always felt this way.

Working from home is the best thing I’ve ever started to do in my life. Although I am not quite making enough money to life on yet, I am slowly but surely getting there!

    Thanks for the interesting read.
    Hannah.

    • Thanks for reading and commenting, Hannah.

There is a lot of freedom working from home, and that’s one of the driving forces for me. I don’t often work naked either, but the option to dress however I like is there most of the time. Cheers.

  3. Really beautiful and easy to read website layout! I love the idea of having freedom of lifestyle. Being able to work from anywhere in the world would be amazing and it is totally possible. I have just started my journey on Wealthy Affiliate and it is one of the best decisions I have made!

    • I agree that you have made a great decision, Philip. Just go one step at a time with the training and building a website and you’ll start to see success in time and develop that lifestyle freedom. Thanks for reading.

  4. Great article. I have just started working from home myself and I agree with you, that it really is the best of both worlds, as far as I am concerned anyway. But it’s not for everyone.

I like your list of ideas of work from home business, but interesting to see that these can all be covered off at Wealthy Affiliate. It must be a huge training platform to teach you all of these things?

  5. Hi Darren

Great reading. I work from home too and whilst I have not as yet ventured into my office naked, you never know what tonorrow shall bring! Lol

In all honesty I love the freedom to start, stop and finish working when I please. Today is a beautiful sunny day, I’m wrapping things up early to go fishing with my husband. You can’t do that in a 9-5 regime! All the best Darren.

    Kind Regards

    Michelle

    • Thanks Michelle. I can relate to what you just said about being able to go fishing and things like that in the middle of the day. It truly is time freedom. All the best and I wish you continued success.
