What Is Ubiqus?

There are quite a few websites out there these days that offer transcription services, as well as jobs as transcriptionists. Sites like Babbletype and TranscribeMe come to mind. What happens is companies have an audio file that they want transcribed into text format. They may also want an audio file translated from a foreign language into English or vice versa.

Ubiqus is the platform that links businesses needing something transcribed with people willing to be paid small amounts to do the actual transcribing of the audio into text.

So far the company boasts more than 21,000 clients who actively use their transcription and translation services, and Ubiqus has been operating since back in 1991.

For the part-time online, work from home job seeker, Ubiqus has a few different gigs on offer on their site, but the most common and most popular are transcription jobs.

This kind of part-time online work is okay for a bit of extra coin, but you could do a lot better by setting up your own gig, like a really simple affiliate marketing biz. It's really cheap and easy to do and it brings in some really nice passive income streams. I've been doing it for years, and it was Wealthy Affiliate that showed me how. Check it out. It's free to join.

How It Works

Join up for free to register yourself as a freelance transcriptionist. The main areas of business that require transcription services are:

  • Business
  • Medical
  • Legal

The main areas of operation and the types of paid gigs you can do on the Ubiqus site include:

  • Transcription
  • Translation
  • Audience Response
  • Interpretation
  • Meeting Support

As I said earlier, the most popular is being a transcriptionist, so that’s the one we’ll focus on.

As a transcriptionist you’ll be given short snippets of audio that you will listen to and transcribe into text. If you are really good at listening while typing at the same time, and can type fast, you may be able to transcribe the audio piece after listening to it only once.

This will also be dependent on the quality of the audio file. Sometimes they can be hard to hear or understand, so you might have to listen to some files many times. This will also be the case if your typing skills are a little on the sluggish side.

What You Will Need

In order to perform your function as a freelance transcriptionist, there are a few tools you will need besides your ability to listen and type what you hear.

Let’s list them:

  • A computer
  • A decent internet connection
  • Headphones
  • A foot pedal to pause audio easily

For some jobs prior transcribing experience will be required, but many jobs can be done by anyone on the site.

How Much Money Can You Make?

The majority of transcription platforms out there will pay workers per audio minute completed. Ubiqus actually pays per word transcribed. The pay amount varies per job, but from what I can gather through my research, the average rate is around $0.007 per word, so not much. That equates to 70 cents per 100 words transcribed.

If you can listen and transcribe at a fast pace, then this might work out okay, but if you type slow and/or have to keep listening to audio over and over again, it could take you ages just to earn a few dollars at those rates.

Target Audience

This is targeted at anyone who wishes to make a bit of extra cash in their spare time. You can work whenever you want, and that’s the real beauty of home-based gigs.

What I Like

  • They offer more opportunities than just transcribing
  • The company has been around for a long time, since 1991
  • Not a bad part-time gig if you can listen to audio and type fast at the same time

What I Don’t Like

  • Some audio files are very unclear, faint and hard to hear, meaning you have to listen to them over and over, which is incredibly time consuming
  • The pay rates are way too low
  • The work is very tedious and boring
  • Many people complain of a distinct lack of available work on the platform

How Much Does Ubiqus Cost?

It doesn’t cost anything to join Ubiqus as a transcriptionist, translator or to perform the other tasks on the platform. However, to make your job easier, you will need a headset and likely a foot pedal for stopping and starting audio while keeping your hands free to type.

Is Ubiqus a Scam?

This is in no way a scam. Ubiqus is headquartered in France and has global offices. It’s a legit company offering genuine business services and work opportunities. The pay just isn’t all that great.

If you have  a keen ear and can type like a champion, then this might work out okay, otherwise I’d advise giving it a miss and look for something more profitable and far more interesting.

My #1 Recommendation for Making Real Money Online

If you like a bit of typing, then how about incorporating that into your own business, where you make all the profits for your efforts.

I do affiliate marketing for a living, writing stuff like you’re reading right now. In fact, with affiliate marketing you can write about any subject in any niche and promote all sorts of products and services, earning commissions when someone buys something through your unique affiliate links.
