What Is A Shopify Online Store

What is a Shopify online store?

Good question.

No doubt you have already heard of Shopify if you’re reading this post and probably wondering what having a store on Shopify actually means and whether it’s worth doing or not. What I can tell you is that tens of thousands of people have set up successful Shopify stores to sell their products and services.

The Shopify Store

Generally Shopify stores tend to be eCommerce stores and retail sites, although you can set one up for just about any purpose. The platform is more targeted at the retail sector though, rather than just running a blog or an online marketing website.

Shopify have set everything up so the process of getting your business online is easy and painless. They even take care of online payments for your store in many different currencies. You can also track all your orders and site visitors with Shopify’s many tools. You don’t even need to find web hosting. Shopify host your site as part of the deal.

What all this means is that you can focus on running your business, getting traffic to your site, making sales and fulfilling orders, rather than deal with the stress of how to build a website and get it fully operational on the internet.

You don’t need tech skills. Shopify is basically plug-and-play, with many awesome and stylish templates to choose from for your online shop front. All templates and themes are easily customisable with colours, images, text and general layout.

If you want to take your Shopify store to the next level, or need something intricate done that only someone with the necessary tech skills can do, then you can call in a web developer to work on your site. So whether you just want to set it all up yourself, or have a developer help out, both scenarios are possible.

Some Advantages Of A Shopify Store?

The Shopify streamlined process means you don’t have to go to the hassle and expense of having a website built from scratch. This also saves a lot of time, as technically you could have your site up and running within less than a day. After all, the idea of your website is to get online and start selling. Shopify makes that possible in a short time span.

Shopify has taken care of the back end for you. All you have to do is focus on making the front end look how you want it to, upload your images and product descriptions, set your prices and away you go.

It’s such a time saver, which is so important when you want and need to get your business operational as quickly as possible. And, worth mentioning again, is the cost savings by being able to do it all yourself (with Shopify’s very helpful guidance, should you need them).

I’ll now list just some of the good points and features of Shopify for easy reference. More details can be found on their website.

  • Shopify Mission Control100s of templates
  • Payment gateways (with different currencies)
  • Loads of tutorials
  • Quality help and support
  • Full-featured content management system
  • Includes a blogging platform to entice traffic to your site
  • Unlimited products and inventory
  • One step order fulfilment (very simple)
  • Sales tracking and other stats
  • Over 70 payment gateways
  • Accept credit card payments
  • SSL Certificate included

While you will no doubt be doing your own marketing, Shopify have in place systems to market your business for you as well, further enhancing your likelihood of online business success.

When you join Shopify you get your very own domain name (of your choosing), not a subdomain as an extension of the Shopify URL, so everything looks completely professional – and it is. This is a simple, yet top class eCommerce-building platform.

Shopify is a major shortcut to getting yourself and your retail or services business online. There’s no need to go it alone, wondering what to do and how to do it right. Shopify help every step of the way if you need it.

  1. Hello, I have read your site in detail and I have heard of shopify before but never to this extent. I have tried amazon before but I think after reading, I will try to get into shopify. You site is clear and to the point and thats what I like to see. It directs me t what I need to understand, not catchy phrases with false promise.

  2. Darren,
Shopify looks like an easy way it you have a product to sell. The amount of product you would have to sell to make a product will be great with their monthly charges. If you do not have your own product, will they help you with product selection. I wonder how well it works with dropship products. How does Shopify promote your site for traffic or do you have to work on getting traffic on your own.
    John.

    • Hi John,

Shopify is a great platform for setting up an eCommerce store with ease. I don’t think they help with product selection, but they do help with promotion of your store, although it’s still wise to do as much of your own promotion and marketing as possible, just like you would do with any business.

Not too sure about the drop shipping option. I’ve never done drop shipping myself, but from what I’ve heard the payments for products are offered directed to the manufacturer, so I’m not sure how that would work in with Shopify’s payment portals.

  3. Hi Darren,

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article on Shopify. You explained the concepts clearly and easily, which very quickly put me in the picture.

I also like the way you articulated some of the advantages of Shopify; of particular interest to me was the one-step order fulfilment.

Lastly, adding the link to your review of Shopify is a great idea.

Thanks for a great article –
