In 10 tips for working at home I’ll be offering up some advice on how to make the transition from a 9 to 5 job, to working at home in an online business a smooth and seamless one.
#1 – Don’t Quit Your Day Job Right Away
Now while you might be keen as hell for a lifestyle change, unless you already have your online business established and making consistent money, don’t quit your day job. You might be able to take the chance if you have plenty of cash in reserve, but if not, just chip away at your online business when you can and only make the break from your regular job when things are looking good.
#2 – Have A Dedicated Home Office
It can be hard to work at home when you have a family and there are lots of distractions. Trying to operate business from your living room or bedroom can be near impossible at times. If you have a study, a spare room or can make space in the garage or basement, then set up a dedicated home office where you can shut everything out and focus on what you have to work on.
#3 – Be Organised
When you work for a boss and work with other employees, much of the organisation for your work schedule is taken care of for you. At home, with only you in charge, it’s an entirely different story. If you’re not organised it will just be chaos. Implement some systems and time schedules. Have To Do lists and get your business in order.
#4 –Discipline Is A Necessity
Without self discipline when working from home you just may not get things done, or not do things efficiently. It takes a lot of discipline to work for yourself, with no set hours and no boss bashing you over the back of the head. If you really lack the discipline, then maybe reconsider the work from home scenario.
#5 – Avoid Shiny Objects And Distractions
If you are doing lots of work online – whether you are selling products from a website, writing books, or doing affiliate marketing – then there will be distractions; what I call shiny objects or butterflies. Their only purpose is to sway your attention away from the tasks at hand. Things like checking your Facebook, clicking on some eye catching ad. There is a time and place for these things. Get the work done first, then you can roam around the net a bit.
#6 – Be Flexible
There is little point working from a home office if you don’t want to be flexible. One of the biggest advantages about working at home is the ability to be able to do other things throughout the day; like take the kids to school or run some errands. Do schedule work hours, but allow yourself the flexibility to change things around and mix things up a bit if you have to. After all, you can work in the evening if you want to make up for it.
#7 – Schedule Work Time
I’ve just mentioned being flexible in your work hours, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t set some sort of work schedule that you try and adhere to. It can be changed as needs arise, but allocate a certain number of hours each day for your online business and try and do each of those hours, even if you have to chop the time slots around a little.
#8 – Take Breaks
It’s important to have breaks when working at home. If you have a tendency to be a workaholic, then working at home, you could just find yourself working all the time and not maintaining a healthy life balance. Always take breaks to refresh your body, mind and spirit.
#9 – Set Goals And To Do Lists
Map out the overall goals for your home business and keep adding to them and adjusting them. Set daily tasks in the form of To Do lists so you are more organised, efficient and are able to stay on top of your work flow. To Do lists are such a simple thing, but yet so very effective.
#10 – Believe In Yourself
Believe that you can successfully work from home and achieve your business goals. Believe in yourself even if those around you don’t. Never let anyone or anything sway you from your self belief. You can achieve anything.

This is very good advice as I’ve been made redundant in my job and am finishing very soon, so I’ll be able to go full time with my online business.
Even though I’m not making anything from it yet, I do have some savings which will provide me with a cushion for a little while until I can earn something from my site which I hope will be soon.
What you’ve written here is easy to read and to follow and I think it’s just what I need to get off to a good start going full time.
