What Is National Consumer Panel and How Does It Work?

It's great to see you here reading my review of National Consumer Panel. I write reviews to help people find profitable and relal ways to make money while also avoiding the scams along the way. So let's see if NCP is worth your time and effort or not.

Also known as Homescan and NCP, National Consumer Panel is a joint venture between the two companies IRi and Nielsen, both market research and consumer insight firms.

How this works is that NCP provide its members with a handheld barcode scanner they can use at home. The participant then takes the scanner to the supermarket every time they visit and scan the barcodes on the items they purchase.

The information is sent back to NCP for compilation and analysis, helping with their research on brands and the buying habits of a cross-section of the population.

Those who join NCP will receive small rewards for their efforts in scanning and providing data. At the end of each week you transfer your stored barcode data over to NCP. This information becomes rewards points for you that you can later redeem for prizes and gift cards.

There are also other ways to earn with National Consumer Panel. You can elect to complete paid surveys, as well as earn more rewards for divulging how much you spend on your grocery shopping and where you shopped.

With regards to the handheld scanner, that’s optional. If you have a smartphone, then there is an app you can install that will scan barcodes.

Stuff like this is okay, but if your goal is to make really good money, you'll never do it by spending time with stuff like National Consumer Panel.

Running your own simple online business is a far more profitable way. My affiliate marketing business brings in more than a fulltime income and most of it's now passive. Check out Wealthy Affiliate for more details on how to get started. It's free to join.

Joining NCP

Not everyone can just log on to the National Consumer Panel website and sign up to take surveys and receive a home barcode scanner. You first have to satisfy a selection of criteria.

For starters you must live in the United States. Secondly, NCP are often only looking for new members from certain geographic locations and demographics. If you meet the criteria, then you will be eligible to set up an account and start earning those rewards.

Are the Rewards Worth It?

Firstly, what kind of things do you receive as rewards when you cash out your points?

  • Gift cards
  • Donations to charity
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Household items
  • Quarterly Grand Prix Cash Sweepstakes Draw valued at $20,000

NCP has a gift catalogue and as soon as you’ve acquired 8000 rewards points, you are eligible to cash out.

Apparently it can take a while to earn enough rewards points to make a purchase from the NCP gift catalogue. One of the most common complaints with things like paid surveys and rewards sites is that the amount you earn compared to the time you spend earning it is really, really low.

Target Audience

This seems to be targeted at home parents, perhaps, who are looking to make a little extra on the side that they can convert to items for the home. It’s sort of a make money online job, but at the same time you’re doing work in the offline world.

What I Like

  • It’s a little different to all the other rewards sites out there
  • Both IRi and Nielsen are very established and highly respected companies

What I Don’t Like

  • It’s limited only to people in the USA
  • Their selection criteria can be fairly strict and not everyone can join
  • There is no option for a payout in actual money
  • It’s all gift cards, charity donations and items from the NCP catalogue
  • The pay off for the time you spend is really low
  • It can be a real chore spending your time in the supermarket scanning every single item you buy and then having to input that information at home and send it off to NCP

How Much Does National Consumer Panel Cost?

It’s totally free to join, if you pass the selection process and receive an invite by email to set up an account. Once you’re in, you can either have a handheld barcode scanner mailed out to your home address, or you can simply download the smartphone app.

Is National Consumer Panel a Scam?

There’s no scam here and it’s an interesting idea. It's not a bad way to make a little bit of extra coin.

However, there are much more profitable and productive ways to spend your time if the goal is to actually make some decent cash. Read below for what I do and recommend.
