Why Do People Work From Home?

Work From HomeWorking from home: It’s a dream for some and a reality for others.

There can be many reasons why people work from home and it’s often by choice. I work from home. Not because I have to due to circumstances, I do it because I want to. It was my choice to pursue work or business where I get to work from a home office. To be honest I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Why I Love Working From Home

I really enjoy the freedom of it. For one I don’t have to get up early, shave, get dressed and sit in traffic on the way to work. I have no set time I have to arrive. I’m not told when I can have lunch or use the bathroom or make a coffee.

If I want I can sit down at my computer in my underwear and get to work. If I choose to I can work at midnight. Most of the time my work hours are totally up to me. If I need to run some errands throughout the day, I can. Some days I work all day. Other times, if I have things to do during the day that aren’t work, I will take care of those things and do some work in the evening instead. If I want to take the day off, I can.

I’ve always loved the concept of time freedom, so working for myself or working from home has always appealed to me. Even in the days before the internet I always craved this kind of lifestyle.

I can play music while working, or watch TV (although I don’t do that much as I find the voices rather distracting, but music’s great). I have that option, though.

If you have a wife/husband and children you get to spend more quality time with them. And we all know how important that is.

The Downside To Working From Home

For me I don’t find there are too many negatives attached to working from home, but everyone’s different.

You do need a certain amount of discipline, because without a wage-paying boss looking over your shoulder it’s entirely up to you to motivate yourself to focus on work and get it done. No one is pushing you or threatening you with being fired or any of that, so you do need to set some structure so you are productive and proactive, rather than just distracted by everything else you could be doing at home.

One of the best ways to accomplish this is to set up an office space that is entirely devoted to work, giving yourself a way of having some privacy to concentrate and allowing you to focus.

Another possible downside is that you never leave your work behind and “go home”. It’s possible you could find yourself getting obsessed with it and working day and night. We all need balance. Occasionally it’s okay to do that, but you wouldn’t want to make a regular habit of it. We all need balance between work and play, family time, getting chores done and leisure time.

If you work from home, or are planning to, set yourself some routines so you:

  1. Get work done
  2. Don’t work 24/7

Both are equally important.

Work From Home Jobs

Not all work from home jobs are internet related, or internet reliant. Most will probably use the internet as a part of the business structure, but some people operate a regular local business out of their homes.

My home businesses are all internet-based. I handle no physical products of any kind, have no person-to-person business meetings, nor go out and about visiting clients. My client base is global, and that’s the one huge advantage of a home-based business that is run entirely on the internet.

I’ll rattle off a list of examples of businesses that can be run from home, but it’ll just be a short list as the possibilities are numerous:

  • Work From HomeeBay/Amazon seller
  • Writing
  • Freelancing
  • Creating a product and selling/shipping it from home
  • Financial advisor
  • Real estate agent
  • Graphic designer
  • Website developer
  • App developer
  • Forex/stock trader
  • Editorial services
  • Virtual assistant
  • Computer programmer
  • Computer technician
  • Artist/sculptor
  • Tutor
  • Affiliate marketer

The list really goes on and on. Some businesses that are local may require the operator to go out and about visiting clients, but the base of operations is still home. Obviously those enterprises that are purely operated online 100% are absolute home-based businesses.

What Is The Best Business To Start From Home?

The World GlobeI personally dabble in a few things online – writing and selling eBooks being one of them – but my main focus these days is affiliate marketing.

The global scope for this business is absolutely enormous. Yes, a lot of people are already in this industry, but with over 2 billion people worldwide using the internet (and with a global population of over 7 billion), that is an incredibly huge marketplace!

If you know nothing about affiliate marketing, then there are a number of places you can learn the trade. You have to be careful though, as some can be dodgy and a complete waste of time and money. To be successful in this business you need to learn the proper way of doing things and how to set up your business for the long-term.

I learnt all about affiliate marketing mainly through a place online called Wealthy Affiliate. There are others that are legit with great training as well, but after much research I decided that Wealthy Affiliate was the best fit for me.

The great thing about Wealthy Affiliate is you can get started for FREE, take a look around, interact with the very helpful community there and even start the training for no cost. There is a paid upgrade option if you decide you want to take your learning to the next level. It’s well and truly worth it in my opinion if you are serious about working from home in this industry. You will learn the right way and not the hard way.

To Sum Up

There are many options for working from home, either part-time, or as your fulltime business. If you are genuine about establishing the sort of lifestyle that offers time freedom, then you should seriously consider getting involved in affiliate marketing. You don’t need to be a salesperson and you don’t need tech skills. All this can be learnt.

  1. Working from home is almost everyone’s dream. However, I often have problems with interruptions. People thought I could drop my project half way through. It is not possible due to housework, pets and children.

Thanks for sharing your information on where people like me can access online training to learn how to start a business online. I am glad to hear too that it is FREE to try. It looks like it works so far to you? Mind sharing your experience with us?

    • Hi Alex and thanks for checking in.

Working from home can certainly have its challenges, and I know just what you mean by interruptions and people assuming you can just drop everything. That’s something that doesn’t really happen when you’re in a regular place of work. Working from home can have plenty of advantages too, but it may not be for everyone.

I’ve been involved in online marketing for a while, but it wasn’t until I signed up with Wealthy Affiliate early this year that I really started to get my business on track. Their training gave me the direction I needed and for the first time I really felt I way travelling in the right direction. Things have looked up for me ever since, so I highly recommend giving Wealthy Affiliate a try.

All the best, happy writing, Nemira

    • Wealthy Affiliate is one of the best places online to learn all about affiliate marketing, building websites, promoting your online business and getting traffic. It’s just a great environment to be involved in. The community at WA is what I appreciate the most. It’s very active and everyone is eager to help one another. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment, Nemira.

  3. Great post and Darren. I work from home because well firstly I can and the because I want to, so I am flexible to be available for my kids.
This is a biggie for me because working for a boss you can hardly get any time off when your kids are sick and you could lose your job. And as I found out becoming a mother babies get ill often, especially from 6 months old – 2 years old when they are teething.
I certainly would have lost my job with the amount of time my daughter was ill.
For me it is about being able to have the best of both worlds: work and be a mom.

    • Hi Lynne. Yes it’s a great feeling being able to work from home. And in your situation being able to tend to you sick daughter without losing your “job” is huge. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  4. The biggest downside I find with working from home is the surrounding family – a terrible thing to say, I know, but the interuptions can make or break your online business. At the end of the day you are probably going to need to spend more time working than you would in an office – you need to concentrate without distractions

    • Hi Chris. What you say can be true for sure, depending on your personal circumstances. I guess it’s a balancing act. Working from home is not for everyone, but it definitely suits me with my temperament. Plus, I’ve always hated having to get up and go to a job, working for someone else. It’s just not me.
