What Is Rodan + Fields?
Rodan + Fields (also known as Rodan & Fields and R+F) is a company that manufactures and sells a range of skincare products. Like many other companies out there, R+F decided to adopt the MLM system to generate sales and grow their distributor base.
Originally Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields got together to create the famous Proactive acne cream. In 2002 Fields and Rodan launched Rodan + Fields and sold skincare products in department stores.
Estee Lauder acquired the company in 2003, but Fields and Rodan bought it back in 2007. Instead of continuing with department store sales, they decided to take Rodan & Fields down the multi level marketing path. In the past couple of years the company has found its way into Canada and Australia.
Their range of skincare products are categorised into “regimens”, such as:
- Sunscreens
- Exfoliators
- Cleansers
- Toners
- Moisturisers
- Creams
While it's possible to make money with this, MLM is a really hard and slow way to earn an income, if you earn anything at all. Out of the 2 I much prefer affiliate marketing over network marketing.

How It Works
You can simply just join to purchase their range of skincare products, or you can go a step further and try to make a bit of money in the process by becoming an independent consultant. You fill out the enrolment form, then purchase a Business Portfolio to get started.
Once you become a consultant it’s then your task to try and both sell Rodan + Fields products for a commission, as well as try to recruit more consultants into the MLM system. These new consultants will form your down line, and you will also make small commissions on their sales.

Why It Likely Won’t Work For Most People
There are a number of problems with the MLM system; whether it be Rodan + Fields, Amway, Mary Kay or any of the many others out there today.
Issue number one is the pyramid system. All MLM companies claim to not be illegal pyramid schemes, but that’s exactly the structure that is formed in MLM. With one or two people at the very top, people on various levels in the middle area, and the vast majority languishing down or near the bottom, the different levels ultimately form a pyramid.
Those at the top make the bulk of the money, while those at the bottom are doing most of the work for very little reward.
Because of these massive, never-ending down lines that are created, everyone from the bottom right up to the top receives a small cut of every sale that’s made. Because of this, MLM companies have to charge extremely high prices for their products in order to be able to compensate everyone.
Most comparative products can usually be sourced for a fraction of the price of a MLM product. At first glance it looks like MLM products must be super superior to everything else out there because of the high price tag. But no, it’s really just ripping people off price-wise in order to be able to compensate all the masses involved in the MLM system.
As per a 2016 income disclosure, 90% of Rodan + Fields consultants earned less than $200 a month.

Who Is The Target Audience?
The target audience for both the products and becoming an independent consultant is mostly women. Some just want to use the product and nothing more. Others may want to turn it into a business, either part-time or fulltime.
The Rodan + Fields opportunity appeals to those who either like the MLM business model, or people who are new to business and wish to escape the grind of a 9 to 5 work life.
The Pros
- MLM seminars can be very motivating
- You can make some cash on the side
- Performance bonuses and incentive trips
The Cons
- You need to really hustle people to become consultants under you
- The products are super expensive and over-priced
- Unless you’re near the top of the pyramid, it’ll be extremely hard to make great money
- It’s a pyramid scheme
- The business kits and upsells are also super expensive
Tools and Training
You will be trained by whoever sponsors you, plus there are regular seminars to attend that will further your training. As far as tools go, they’re available to support your business, but obviously you need to purchase these, and at a very high price.
How Much Does Rodan + Fields Cost?
Well, let’s dig a little deeper here. For starters, there are the products. These can range from the $30 mark right up to $300+. Your initial compulsory Business Portfolio will set you back $45. After that you are required to buy product, either to use yourself or try and sell to others.
In order to have any chance of making decent money (remember that %90 of consultants make less than $200 a month), you will need to work really hard to build an active down line. You will really need to purchase more expensive business kits, and these range in price from $395 up to around a grand.
Is Rodan + Fields A Scam?
I’m not a fan of MLM, no matter what the company is. I don’t think Rodan + Fields is a scam in and of itself, but the MLM pyramid business system is a risky one and it requires a hell of a lot of hard work and hustle to develop an active down line that will actually make you money.
While some people love MLM, many others hate it for the simple reason that people they know who are involved in MLM annoy the hell out of them, always trying to get them to join.
The other issue is the price of the products. Very, very expensive for the most part. There’s no way they can really justify such high prices. The prices are only so high because everyone needs to be compensated with commissions on every sale. No other reason.
They aren’t through the roof because Rodan & Fields has the very best products. They’re high because MLM schemes have so many overheads in the form of the multitude of consultants.
By all means join if you happen to love their products, but if you are seeking out a real business opportunity that can really take you places, then seriously consider looking elsewhere. The majority of MLM schemes simply won’t make you much money and you’ll be working your butt off just to bring in some spare change. That’s the reality.
MLM is a great money spinner for the owners, but not for the consultants, unfortunately.
A Far Better Alternative to Rodan + Fields
If you really want to start your own business that’s not a MLM scheme, a business that can grow and scale as much as you want it to and without the need to hassle people you know or build down lines, then have you considered getting into affiliate marketing?
It takes a bit of time and work to get going, but over time much of the revenue you generate will be passive and residual income. Affiliate marketing costs very little to get started or run, you don’t need to buy and sell products, warehouse anything, or even leave your home if you don’t want to.
It can be accomplished entirely online. On top of that, you have a global marketplace to sell to, and these days more than 3 billion people per day are accessing the internet on a regular basis. Online shopping has grown into a trillion dollar industry.
An affiliate marketing business will lead to lifestyle freedom, where you have both time and the money to enjoy your time.
